Pedra Bonita is in front of a rock formation that made Pedra da Gavea famous, known as Cabeça do Imperador (“The Emperor’s Head”). The face, that looks like has been carved in the rock, “looks” towards Pedra Bonita and, according to some popular legends, and is the remains of the Phoenician King that tried to colonize Rio in ancient times. At Pedra Bonita there is a glider ramp where gliders and hang gliders depart from, landing on Praia do Pepino, 693m below, in what is considered one of the most beautiful flights around the world. The way to the ramp is busy and leads practitioners and first-timers to the area. Below the ramp there is a stand to watch the flights. Pedra Bonita is part of the Tijuca National Park and it is open until later in the summer (7 p.m.). This is the ideal time to be in one of the best places in Zona Oeste and watch the sunset.
